Pissing Off the Gays, I’m Sure

Photobucket

Now, you know that I love the gays. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the gays. Always have, always will. But my love for you will never diminish my common sense!

And I’m sure that a lot of them would be highly offended in reading what I’m about to say but it is what it is.

The above picture was found at Perez Hilton’s site under a post entitled “Just Sayin.” Now, I am a fan of Perez Hilton and feel that his site is really interesting (even though I rarely know even half the stars he posts about).

But that shit posted above OFFENDED ME to the fucking max!!

How dare you compare the struggle that blacks have endured for HUNDREDS of damn YEARS to the struggles of who you want to fucking marry? HOW DARE YOU?

I understand that gays have a struggle…they fight every day for their right to be respected. However, you weren’t sold into slavery b/c of your choices; blacks were for something they had NO CHOICE in and thats the color of their skin. You weren’t beat into submission to work for NOTHING; blacks were, again, b/c of the color of their skin!

So you’re gay and you wanna get married? Okay, fine! But your comparison with this desire to be with someone of the same sex to the struggle that blacks have dealt with for SO DAMN LONG (and in some ways STILL FEEL IT) somehow lessens that plight…it diminishes it down to fucking NOTHING and that is absolutely disgusting.

I don’t care who anybody wants to be with. As long as it does not interfere with MY life and what I am trying to do, I could really care less. But do NOT disrespect or compare the struggle of my ancestors over your desire to be with someone of the same sex. I’m not even FEELING this comparison!

And if you’re gay and offended, please feel free to post your thoughts! We’ll debate until I’m blue in the face over this b/c the gay struggle in NO WAY COMPARES to the struggle of blacks…at least not in MY eyes!!!!

I think the point of this contrast was not to equate the struggle for gay rights with the civil rights movement for blacks, but to inspire the sentiment that separate is not equal. I’m not offended by your post at all, and I can certainly understand why you would feel offended by the implication in P’s post. Maybe a caption on the picture would have been more clear. Then again, wtf do I know? Maybe he DID mean it the way that you interpreted it! Love your site, btw.

I’m not offended. I just want to remind all that black and gay aren’t mutually exclusive. It’s most important particularly when when white gay folks come up with these kind of comparisons forgetting that the Civil Rights struggle was fought for vehemently by Black gay folks (i.e. Bayard Rustin who organized the march on washington). Freedom isn’t a “that was your turn, now its my turn” thing. Black gay folks are the missing element here. Where’s the realization that Black gay folks are STILL having to ask for equal protection under the law?

As a lesbian black woman I am always the first one looked at when i’m around a bunch of so-called activist white lezzes who wanna start comparing and contrasting struggles. I 100% disagree with any argument validating the black rights struggle to the gay rights sturggle. First of all ( i dont mean to take up your blog here but I gotta break it down) unless you’re a flamingly gay man walking around in heels and a tutu, no one knows that you’re gay. And unless you’re a stud/butch/whatever woman, no one knows you’re gay. So you will not be disenfranchised, degraded, publicly humiliated or judged automatically whenever u walk into a room. Black people on the other hand…its rather hard to go somewhere and leave your blackness at home. Everyone sees it. Its there. Thats huge difference number 1. Secondly, gay people need to back up off the comparisons until they’ve logged in at least half as much of the struggle. Sorry. Like I said, im a black lesbian so I have it twice as bad but I know BS when I smell it and this reeks.
