Haters
04. February 2010

I know that we said that we’d let go of the word but I wanted to speak on it a bit.

I was having a conversation with a girlfriend of mine over lunch a few days ago. She was saying that since she started her new business, it seems that a lot of the people that she once thought were friends have now began targeting her, talking shit behind her back, not returning phone calls, etc. And then she said, “It’s cool. Haters keep me motivated.”

I’m sure that we’ve heard someone say this before or hell…we may have even said it ourselves. There are many things that motivate me but miserable, self loathing people do not.

From where I’m standing, “haters” are generally people who are miserable within their own skin…they’re unhappy with their lives, their jobs, the fact that they only sit back and watch others ‘do’ while they wait for opportunities to fall in their lap. It doesn’t “motivate” me to see a person be so miserable. What motivates me is my desire to be greater than the past that people THINK precedes me. What motivates me is knowing that I, too, deserve to be happy. What motivates me is my own desire to be successful and have the things in life that I want. I’m nowhere near close to where I want to be but you mean to tell me that just as I am finally beginning to see a light at the end of my tunnel, I should thank and attribute all my motivation to someone that didn’t want to see me successful in the first place?

I get it…but I don’t get it.

I’m not an extremely religious person. I’m faithful and have my own relationship with God that I don’t feel the need to detail with anyone. And that is what allows me to pray for people who are so discontent with their own lives that they can’t stand to see someone else as the victor. I’m motivated my own damn self. I’ve seen enough brokeness to maintain my own motivation. I don’t need “haters” to help me with that. I have old bank statements, memories of being hungry and damn near on the street, and my own former demons to remind me to do my best.

I guess whatever works to motivate you, go for it. But you’ll never see me offering up a plate of “thanks” to a miserable, no plan having ass heathen. “Hate” me from afar…I have mountains to climb.

Yup! The phrase gets me every time. Saying “haters motivate me” seems so (for lack of a better word) ridiculous to me. So you mean to tell me that you, graduated from high school, got a Ph.D in business and run a Fortune 500 company….because of your haters? If that’s the case you should send them a gratuity check every month, just because they motivated you. You can’t muster up your own motivation? I refuse to credit some buffoon for my happiness.

*i agree 130% with this post!!!*

    I.Know.that’s.right

…Even though I don’t speak on “haters” too much anymore. That gives them to much credit. Mentioning them validates their existence and #imoffdat

    On to the next

You know I’m one of your biggest supporters. Do you! I see big things for you in the future! See you at the top!

  3. necole bitchie whispers:

Oh and one more thing,I don’t know about haters, but my doubters have helped motivate me. I can’t tell you how many people didn’t believe in my vision. Especially my own family. People laughed at me, turned their backs but it pushed me harder because in my mind I said “u know what, I can show you better than I can tell you”.

  4. isis whispers:

“Ya damn right!!” I understand what ya friend meant tho. I let my “haters” motivate me by proving them wrong. I feel like I’m my only competition but sometimes you need that extra boost to make you bust ya ass a lil harder and what better kick swift to the ass than to know someone wants u to fail. Some ppl need that. Anywho, knowing a lil of your history, from what you’ve told,I respect you and pray you exceed ya goals and expectations. Be blessed mamaz.

  5. TheTweeterMama whispers:

I feel u on this one Jia!
I myself dislike the saying “Haters motivate me” I always correct people when they use it around me and especially when they say it to me.
My Grandma told me many years ago that haters make the world go round’ I only believe this to be half true because if a person has haters they tend to do things to prove to the haters that they can do it. But at the same time the haters aren’t the ones making the world go round’ our hard working asses are and they are reaping the benefits off our sweat.
Nothing in this world motivates me more than my children. They motivate me to work harder to provide them with the things that I did not have when I was growing up. As a single parent (their fathers ARE around and helping) I have managed to do exactly that.
With all of this being said….Jia u and I have talked and u know how I feel…so DO U! All that is planned for ur life is happening just not fast enough for u…JUST DON’T GIVE UP!
    Love ya girl!

  6. Eiphlurt whispers:

I like this post I never gave my haters no props for me doing me I have learned to ignore people because the more you acknowledge them the more power and fuel you give to their life..If hating and praying for my downfall makes u feel good at night may god be with u..Because I’m going to get to where I need to be with or without ur hate

    Preach Jia!

I don’t even like using the word, “Hater”. Your past experiences should be your own motivation to reach higher in life.
As I said to you before; I’ve finally learned that no matter what you do in life, someone is going to have a problem with it. As long as we’re heading in the right direction, their thoughts/opinions/shade doesn’t even matter.. Fuck’em!

  10. Mark Dub whispers:

Nothing’s better than to work hard for something and to attain it. But damn….don’t it feel good to see em all up on it…especially when they naysayed your ability to attain it. I feel and understand both sides of the coin. Continue to get it, Jia; you have a throng of people in your corner.
